Breakthrough WeekWelcome to the breakthrough week. The entire purpose of week 3 is to help free you from barriers, beliefs, stories and more that trap us and stop us from having the freedom to create the life we want to.
The main part of week 3 is the alignment levels and how to uncover where you are stuck. Most people try to create change at behaviour level and that is why they remain stuck as behaviour changes easily if we unblock identity, values and beliefs. Let's get started and unlock the door |
|
Alignment Levels
Robert Dilts created a model called Logical levels which we have worked on and expanded over the years to created what we have here which is alignment levels. The purpose of this model is to allow you to think about where you are stuck and get unstuck. The levels are:
|
Goal Vision
This is your goal, your target, your vision of how life should be. Examples are:
The reason we start at this level is because this is how we see the incongruence between the other levels. For example, if you are heading towards building a business but your identity is "I am the furthest thing from a businessperson possible" you are setting yourself up for some huge challenges at the behaviour level when you start, or even if you can start!
- I am trying to build a business
- I want to lose weight and be healthy
- I want to make new friends
The reason we start at this level is because this is how we see the incongruence between the other levels. For example, if you are heading towards building a business but your identity is "I am the furthest thing from a businessperson possible" you are setting yourself up for some huge challenges at the behaviour level when you start, or even if you can start!
Identity - who are you?
Your identity is a set of beliefs you hold about yourself. Those beliefs are normally started with "I am.........". It is the story you tell yourself and others about who you are.
Try asking yourself the question "Who am I?" and see what comes out.
I (Alan) say things like "I am a geek, I am strong, I can learn anything, I am a Marvel fan". I used to have a lot of negative identities when I was younger thinking things like "I am shy, I am fat, I am a victim" and more. These really stopped me from making progress.
Identity is what you believe about yourself. Beliefs are about other things/people/concepts.
Is your identity in alignment with your dream? On the course we gave three examples of when identity conflicts with a dream but there are so many more:
If you have conflicting identity and goals, then it makes doing the activities to fulfil your goals really difficult. You are going to find it difficult to manage your money if you believe you are bad with it and not matter how hard you try to change your behaviour you are going to fall back to your identity. This is what keeps us stuck and stops us from making progress on our goals.
People believe identity is fixed; they think it is set in stone. People say things like "I am bad at money, I am bad at maths, I am bad with technology" and this then gives them the excuse to not try as that is just WHO THEY ARE.
Your identity is not fixed. You can change it, you can develop it, you can craft it. The Alan Donegan you see in the videos is VERY different to the one that got bullied at school, struggled through his youth to find his place in the world and fought to even get a job. I developed this new version of myself over years.
You can choose your identity. You can choose who you are and how you want to show up in the world. Why not make up a version you actually like and start to develop it.

How; you might ask? We will come onto this in the beliefs section but there are simple steps. For example, you choose the identity "I am a healthy person".
The first action is to decide what this means to you. Does a healthy person exercise every day, choose vegetables over cake 80% of the time, take vitamins in the morning? Choose and then start to do those things that show yourself you are a healthy person and create your new identity. After a while of doing it you have the proof you need to start believing it! More to come on this in the beliefs section

Values
Values are an internal list of what is most important to us. For example, some people think that family is the most important thing, some think health is the most important thing and some think freedom is more important than anything. What your values are directly impacts how you behave and act in day-to-day life.
If you think family is more important than your health, you will look after other people at the expense of your own health. We covered a huge amount on Values in Week 1 of the course. Read the notes and watch the video here.
When reading the barriers to creating an extraordinary life in the pre-course survey we read this answer: "I want to be healthier, but convenience food is so convenient"
We agree whole heartedly but the Donegan's don't give into convenience food as we value health over convenience every day. We are optimising for health not speed and ease.
What are you optimising for - convenience or health?
It doesn't really matter which one you choose; you will just get different results. Where the problems start is when are goal is health and we value convenience so at the behaviour level we eat fast food and wonder why we can't fix health. We beat ourselves up for not getting healthy but never change our choices in the moment because we value or place more importance on convenience than health
Whatever you are optimising for, own it, and be happy with it. We promise not to judge. Maybe convenience is the top value for you and that is ok, just expect your physical form or body to reflect your daily behaviours. Your behaviours are a reflection of your values.

Beliefs

A belief is an idea or thought that we hold as if it was "true" or a "fact of life". One of the best examples of this came in the Q&A this week where we had a wonderfully brave course participant come forward and share his belief that "no-one had ever become successful without at least one supportive parent. "
This is a deeply held belief and this participant had gone through some tough times and lost his adopted parents at a young age. He now believed that this was the thing that was holding him back, and the worse part about it is we can't go back and change it!

A belief can be as simple as "I believe the sun will come up tomorrow" or as complex as "I believe the only way to get rich is to win the lottery or inherit money". They are the things we say to ourselves and hold as true.
Some of these beliefs are positive. "I (Alan) believe that you can learn anything given time." This belief helps me to make progress because I when I get stuck I work out what I need to learn to get past this problem and start to take action. Some people have the opposite beliefs and I have heard family members say "You can't teach an old dog new tricks!" They believe it is too late to learn new things and as such there is no point trying.
Which one of these believes is true?
Neither? Both? Actually I don't care at all. I care which one helps me to lead a positive and happy life. I choose the empowering belief not the disempowering belief.
Have you ever taken the time to examine your beliefs and then to choose which ones you want to hold onto? Most people don't think you can choose what they believe they just believe it because their parents told them so, or all their friends believe it, or because someone in a position of authority told them so.
You get to choose your beliefs so choose wisely as some beliefs will trap you and some will free you and help you to make progress and none of them are true anyway!

We have a elder overweight friend that we had an hour long zoom with about health trying to persuade him to do something about his weight and his failing health. He explained that he has been researching this and talking to doctors and all his research let to the fact that it was impossible to lose weight sustainably. Anything he did was a temporary fix and he would always get fat again. And not only would he put the weight back on but his metabolism would be lower leaving him in worse condition.
His health was failing and declining rapidly and he believed there was nothing he could do to change it. His doctors kept telling him to loose weight and he kept telling them that wasn't possible; tell me how!
He would rather die than change his belief that it is impossible to loose weight. Beliefs are SO POWERFUL. These are the things that wars are fought over, lives lost and created and empires built. A belief can empower you or kill you.
Our friend was choosing his story over his dream to be healthy. Are you choosing your stories over your dream? Would you prefer to believe that it isn't possible for you to fix your finances or would you rather get over that and work on fixing it. You can't have both.
You get to decide. Dream or story? Which one do you want?

This is also where the chance of people taking offense takes place. People say to me "Alan in my case it isn't a story it is a fact I can't get the money to people to start my business in my area." They say "Alan, in my case it isn't a story I have a real health condition that stops me from doing this". They say "Alan, I wish I could do that but in my case I really am just bad at Maths and I am not able to do what you do"
This is the person holding onto the story they have about what is possible for them. A belief is nothing more than an idea that you have created proof around that it is real.
I think of beliefs as table tops. The belief is the table top and then the legs of the table are the proof or evidence that the belief is true. So if you have a belief (table top) with one leg how strong is that belief? It is really wobbly and easy to knock down. If you have a belief that has lot of legs it is sturdy and can't be knocked down easily.
People come up with a belief then go out into the world and look for back up that their belief is true. Our friend who is overweight and has failing health has struggle to keep the weight off for year which adds lots of legs to his table/belief that it is impossible to loose weight. Then he went online and looked for studies that proved that if you diet you will put the weight back on afterwards. If you try to loose weight then you will be in a worse position afterwards! He build more and more legs to back up his belief until it was SO STRONG that it couldn't be shaken and he was forever trapped.
Sometimes these beliefs start when you are young. Katie's Mum didn't believe she was creative and Katie started to believe the same about herself. She learnt that if you follow a pattern and make something then that is not creative. Katie was great at following patterns to create things but never believed she was creative. She build a strong belief that stopped her from expressing herself.
You are probably thinking "ok, Alan we get it, beliefs are powerful and there are disempowering and empowering ones; but if we have a disempowering one that we think is true how do we change it?"
Well I am glad you asked. The first step is to reframe the belief and we have three ways for you to do that:

Well I am glad you asked. The first step is to reframe the belief and we have three ways for you to do that:
- Add the word yet to the end of the belief
- Turn it into a question that can be solved
- State why this is the reason you need to do this

Let's take a real example from the course. In the pre-course survey someone told us that "They aren't business minded". How would you reframe that?
Let's reframe the believe, chop out some of the old legs and weaken the negative belief. After we have weakened and reframed the negative belief it is time to start developing new more empowering beliefs instead. How do you do that?
- I am not business minded yet. The word yet allows the possibility that this might change and maybe we have the power to change it. Do you think that I was born "business minded"? Did I pop out of the womb making deals, closing sales and asking for payment upfront? or did I learn that?
- Turn it into a question. Instead of repeating for years, "I can't do this because I am not business minded" try asking a question. How might I become more business minded? how might I develop a business mindset? How might I become a really cool and good business person?
- Use this as the reason that you should do it. For example maybe you start to think, I am not business minded so this is why I should start a business because I want to learn, because I might bring a new fresh perspective, because I might have fun. The fact that I am not business minded is EXACTLY the reason I am the right person to do this.
Let's reframe the believe, chop out some of the old legs and weaken the negative belief. After we have weakened and reframed the negative belief it is time to start developing new more empowering beliefs instead. How do you do that?
Skills / Capabilities
This area is about your skills. None of us are born with all the skills we need. We need to learn how to negotiate, present, sell, look after ourselves and more. The question is do you have the skills to back up your goal?
None of us are born with all the skills we need we have to develop them over the years. I believe you can learn anything given time and space. So give yourself the gift of a little bit of time and space and expand the skills you have that tie into your goal or vision.
Question
One question that I find SUPER helpful here is "Who do I have to become to achieve this goal?" This question helps me think of the type of person that I have to become and then I can get to work on developing that identity, those skills and more to support my journey to the vision!
- If you want to launch a business are you learning sales so that get that business started?
- If you are working on your health are you studying longevity and developing your cooking skills to make healthy food?
- If you are wanting to write a book are you developing your writing skills through conscious learning?

Behaviours
This is the area that everyone tries to create change. They say they want to get fit so they start a challenge, they say they want to write a book so they try to write for 20 minutes at 6am, they say they want to start a business so they work on the website every day.
They are creating change at the behaviour level through willpower along and willpower is finite. If it isn't back up by a supporting identity, values and beliefs using willpower to change behaviours is doomed to failure.
If you create change at the other levels and then back it up with action at the behaviour level it will be easier to follow through. STOP trying to change your behaviour and start working on your beliefs, identity and values first.
If you truly value convenience food over health then trying to make a salad each day to eat is doomed to failure over the long term. You need to change your identity, values and beliefs and then getting the actions to follow is so much easier.
Never start at this levels. Start working through the other levels and then choose the behaviour that flows from your identity, values and beliefs. You still need to take massive action but first let's find alignment otherwise we are just torturing ourselves trying to force ourselves to do something that we truly don't want to or believe is possible.
Step out of purgatory, stop torturing yourself through willpower alone and find alignment at all levels. This will make doing the behaviour SO MUCH EASIER!

Environment
This might sound like a basic level but it has incredible power to affect your ability to follow through. Let me give you a few examples of how mis-alignment here can cause problems:
Environment is INCREDBILY powerful and can make or break and endeavour and it is so important to think through this level. How can you create an environment that backs up your goal and identity rather than makes it harder?
Can you set your house up so there are zero barriers to exercising, trainers by the door, kits bag washed and ready, weighted vest for walking there and out for you to use. Can you remove all the unhealthy food temptation from your house so you can focus on being healthy and your environment doesn't tempt you to go another direction?
You are trying to give up smoking and drinking then don't hang out with the smokers and drinkers for as much time. You are trying to start a business find an environment where you can focus, find entrepreneurs to be around, create an environment that inspires action.
An example from our life. Katie and I were in Buenos Aires and I wanted to run but the streets are covered in dog shit (they don't tidy up), it was uneven, cold and I just didn't want to do it. Environment trumped will power. Now we have moved to Mexico and we live on the beach I bound out of bed every morning and run along the beach in the morning sun, I don't even need will power as environment is so inline with my values of health, with my identity as a healthy person and my belief I can be fit and strong.
Take a moment to go through your goals and ask is my environment supporting me or hindering me? Then notice how you might be able to change your environment to better support the life you actually want to live!
- You want to start a business, you believe it is possible, you are pumped to get going but you have bad Wi-Fi at home, your kids don't respect your working hours and interrupt continuously and your partner doesn't believe in your project and keeps telling you to go back to work.
- You want to get healthy, you believe it is possible and you are excited. You partner does the weekly shop and only buys un-healthy food saying it is all he likes, the gym is a half n hour drive away, you live on a street without street lights and can't go running at night when you have time.
- You want to improve your relationships and are excited to do so but you work opposite shifts, you can't find time together, they turn on the television as soon as they are home and are distracted and the dog keeps barking at you and you can't focus.

Alignment example
The key to this whole week is finding alignment or congruence in the different areas of your life. To the write is an example of someone who has found alignment and starts working on building their business.
Does this mean it will work? No! What it does mean is they have given themselves the best possible opportunity and they will feel so much less friction taking action. They won't have internal conflict over selling, creating and getting rejected. They will find taking action so much more fun and rewarding. |
Homework
Now onto the homework….. Have a go at the exercises and see what comes up. Remember, there are no right answers. Please let us know how you get on in the Facebook group, ESPECIALLY if you get stuck, frustrated or overwhelmed. We're here to support you.
1. Reframe your stories.
We all have stories. As humans, we are story making machines! Stories are not good or bad, they're just helpful or unhelpful (or perhaps neutral) in building your version of extraordinary.
Have you been noticing your stories over the last couple of weeks? Let's keep the helpful ones! For example, Alan has a story/belief that he can learn anything. That's a useful one to keep.
There are some stories that aren't helpful and are stopping you living the life you want to lead. Now is the time to shine a light on them and use some reframes to change them.
Reframing just means looking at it in a different way. Apply these three reframes to the stories that need changing/updating and see what you come up with:
a) Add "yet" to the end of your story/belief. For example, the old story might be "I'm not business minded" or "I'm not good at business" or "I'm not good at maths". Add "yet" to the end of each of these so the new story becomes…. "I'm not business minded yet", "I'm not good at maths yet"
b) Turn the story into a question. "How might I become business minded?" or "Who might I develop a business mind?" or "How might I become comfortable with numbers"
c) Say "this is why I MUST do it". For the "I'm not business minded" example this might become "I must launch my business because I don't have business experience so I can come at this with a beginner's view and spot things other people don't. My inexperience is my strength"

2. Do the alignment exercise for a priority life area
The key to building your extraordinary life is to have congruence/alignment in your life. Most people attempt to change by focussing on the behaviour they want to start or stop and then get frustrated or procrastinate or slip back into the old habit before too long. But, if your goal, identity, values, beliefs, skills and environment are all aligned, changing the behaviour is the easy bit!
The steps to doing this exercise are:
a. Pick a priority area of life
Which are of life are you going to work to align? You might use your values to do choose. Maybe you put health and vitality as your number one value. Start there with your alignment check!
b. Go through the levels one by one
These are the levels. Scroll up for more details and explanation if you need it
c. Jot down what’s going on in each area
d. Work to uncover what's happening
How do you do this?! Here's some ideas:
e. Ask yourself the question “Is this how I want to show up in the world?”
Here's an example of alignment and congruence in the career and business life area:

e. Ask yourself the question “Is this how I want to show up in the world?”
Here's an example of alignment and congruence in the career and business life area:
3. Share your new beliefs, identity and more in the Facebook group
