Debt Warning

25/3/2020

How many companies have messaged you this week offering to extend your credit limit? Offering you free overdrafts for a month?  Offering to lend you money?

With the Coronavirus lock-down in full swing, flow of money slowing and businesses having to lay people off we are at our most vulnerable in many years!
Picture
This is a warning against unscrupulous companies that are going to try and take advantage of you during this time.  They are going to do it under the guise of helping you through the situation but in reality they are going to leave you far worse off in the long run than if they didn't help at all!

Update 25/08/2020: This  was written just as lock down was starting in March 2020 and this is still going on now and always will do.  Car dealerships make more money on the financing and insurance than they do the car itself.  Online catalogue companies offer you "anything you want" buy now, pay later at 39.9% APR. Companies that lend money make more, when you pay slower!  The debt warning isn't just for the height of a pandemic it is something you need to be wary of always!

Quarantined? What can you build?

19/3/2020

Are you stuck in the house?  Have you been quarantined? Wondering what to do with al the new time on your hands? Netflix calling to you?

Katie and I are in New Orleans, Louisiana.  Normally a hot bed of music, food and partying.  Not at the moment though!

Alan this morning creating this blog post to share with you. Focusing on creation!
We came here for Katie to learn Jazz piano, to go to the bars and listen to jazz and soak up the food and culture.  3 or 4 days after we arrived here, the state shut down all restaurants, bars, clubs, events, gyms etc. and the city went on lock-down.

We now have many hours on our hands and I am wondering what to do with them!  What am I going to build?  What am I going to learn?  What am I going to create?

What to do in changing times....

16/3/2020

The world seems to be changing faster than ever before and with these changing times comes uncertainty.  This post is inspired by the fact that PopUp Business School (an events business) has had 10 events cancelled this week because of the Coronavirus.
With change happening so quickly and so out of the blue it is difficult to prepare.  What is important is how you react.

16/03/2020 Bare shelves at Walmart from Panic buying related to the Coronavirus. Things are changing so quickly......
I don't see the rate of change slowing down, I can't foresee the next black swan event and I have given up trying to predict what is going to happen next.  What I am working on is how I react and I want to share some thoughts that I think will give you comfort and inspiration in these dark and changing times...…...

Building an entrepreneurial culture

11/3/2020

"The biggest challenge we have is that we can't be seen to fail" said the director of innovation for one of the biggest companies in the UK as we sat sipping flavoursome coffee, outside some of the swankiest offices I have ever seen in my life.

I had spent an hour understanding his company's goals (to create an innovative, entrepreneurial culture) and what was stopping them (A HUGE list!).

Finally I asked the director of innovation "How about we do ….. to change it?"  He looked me straight in the eye and without a hint of irony said "This is not something we can change!"

I left that meeting feeling shocked, confused and with a question burning within me "How do you create a vibrant positive entrepreneurial culture in your business and what stops people from doing this?"
